Phetchabun

What :

Thick forests, rolling hills, and steep mountain ranges have earned Phetchabun a reputation for being the “Little Switzerland” of Thailand.

National Parks and tiered waterfalls abound here, and not surprisingly trekking is one of the most popular activities for guests on luxury tours of Thailand. Khao Kho National Park’s cool weather and alpine topography are largely responsible for earning the “Thai Alps” nickname. Nam Nao National Park’s borders shelter tigers, Malaysian sun bears, boards, and elephants, which can be spotted while hiking through the well-tended trails.

Si Thep Historical Park protects what remains of a 10th century Khmer-style city that held way over the region as the first Thai Kingdoms emerged from the thick forests and mountains of Northern Thailand. So far, 70 structures have been uncovered by excavation, and many of them have been restored by park staff.

When :

Rains falling from June through October make the jungles particularly lush, and the wildlife in under the canopy is generally more active this time of year in the many national parks. March to May has the highest temperatures, but the weather is brisk compared to lower elevations farther south. Phetchabun’s best weather falls between November and January.

Where :

The capital of Phetchabun Province in the lower portion of Northern Thailand, Phetchabun Town can be reached by private vehicle from Bangkok.

Who :

With diverse wildlife and stunning mountain views, Phetchabun is a worthy stop on the road north to the cultural capital Chiang Mai.

Appropriate Attire :

Western-wear is fine in town, but if you’re heading into the park to explore the ruins dress for a hike.

Jason & Cindy Burgess - October 2013

My family and I took a two week long tour of Thailand with Easy Tours of Thailand and the trip truly could not have been any better.

Our guide was very personable, knowledgeable, and her English was excellent. In addition to offering a unique and local perspective throughout the tour, we were completely at ease with her and felt that she truly wanted to make our experience the best it could possibly be.

The private driver and vehicle that was set up for us was also excellent. I knew prior to our trip that it would probably be best to reserve this type of service during our travels, but I had no idea how invaluable this ended up being for us. He maneuvered through crowded streets and unexpected roadblocks with ease, and knew which areas to avoid driving through and efficient alternative routes. To top it off, the vehicle was always very clean, air conditioned, and there were cold drinks waiting for us after visiting a site.

The tour itself was completely tailored to what we wanted to see and what our interests are with assistance from their U.S Sales Office prior to arriving in Bangkok. They provided a day by day itinerary for us which was great, but the best part was having the freedom to change things as needed, or make unexpected stops to explore, as the tour unfolded.

I would definitely use this company again if we go back to Thailand.
