Pattaya is known as "Bangkok's Backyard Playground" due to its proximity to the metro area. Only a 2-hour drive from a city of 8,000,000 people, Pattaya has a huge array of development, activities, and vacationers. Although there are a few hills in the general area, the beach areas are relatively flat and reminiscent of a beach in Florida perhaps. It should be noted that Pattaya has the reputation as the place where wild nightlife and prostitution is the most prolific; hence it is not the best choice for families, despite the fact that there are several good family activities available.
Pattaya is an easy 2-hour drive from Bangkok.
Generally speaking, November through March is the best time to visit. April and May are the hot and dry months while June through October is the rainy season. However, really anytime is a good time to visit Thailand.
Plenty of options are available in all price ranges.
Pattaya is like a mini-Disneyland with zoos, theme parks and many attractions. Every kind of water sport imaginable is available. Pattaya also has a very nice elephant village where visitors can interact with the gentle giants. There are two different mini-submarine tours available to allow visitors to view the marine life in the gulf without getting wet. There is also a “Flight of the Gibbon” zip line course outside of Pattaya in an impressive rain forest. This is one of three Flight of the Gibbon experiences in Thailand.
There are several islands, which visitors can take a ferry to, that are very near to the mainland. These islands offer better water and beach quality for the person who doesn’t want to stray too far from Bangkok, yet wants a taste of Thailand’s exotic beaches. There are a few decent snorkeling options on some of these islands.
Pattaya Beach –
This is the center of all the action.
The quality of the beach and the water is fairly low when compared to other beach destinations in Thailand.
Jomtien Beach –
A less crowded option that is good for families as it is home to the amusement park and several other family oriented activities.
