Kamphaeng Phet

What :

Halfway between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Kamphaeng Phet guarded the nascent Thai Kingdoms that emerged from the jungles of Northern Thailand during the 14th century from Burmese and Khmer incursions.

Kamphaeng Phet’s (Diamond Wall) ancient fortifications can still be seen in the town’s old city where the thick ramparts that protected its citizens still partially stand alongside ancient temple ruins.

Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is the town’s top draw for travelers on luxury tours of Thailand looking to explore the ancient ruins that once protected the often invaded Northern Thai kingdoms like Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. Dotted with dozens of Buddha images, the ruins feature several distinct architectural and artistic forms developed over the first centuries of Thai culture.

Kamphaeng Phet National Museum, not far from the center of town and the historical park, has an excellent collection of artifacts spanning the city’s history.

When :

June through October rainfall in the region makes the verdant jungle particularly lush. March to May are the months with the highest temperatures, and the beast weather is from November to January.

Where :

Kamphaeng Phet is the capital of Kamphaeng Phet Province in Northern Thailand. It’s best reached by private vehicle leaving from either Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Who :

The historical park near the center of town is a must-see for anyone touring Thailand.

Appropriate Attire :

Western style clothing is fine in town. If you’re heading into the park to explore the ruins, dress for a hike.

Jason & Cindy Burgess - October 2013

My family and I took a two week long tour of Thailand with Easy Tours of Thailand and the trip truly could not have been any better.

Our guide was very personable, knowledgeable, and her English was excellent. In addition to offering a unique and local perspective throughout the tour, we were completely at ease with her and felt that she truly wanted to make our experience the best it could possibly be.

The private driver and vehicle that was set up for us was also excellent. I knew prior to our trip that it would probably be best to reserve this type of service during our travels, but I had no idea how invaluable this ended up being for us. He maneuvered through crowded streets and unexpected roadblocks with ease, and knew which areas to avoid driving through and efficient alternative routes. To top it off, the vehicle was always very clean, air conditioned, and there were cold drinks waiting for us after visiting a site.

The tour itself was completely tailored to what we wanted to see and what our interests are with assistance from their U.S Sales Office prior to arriving in Bangkok. They provided a day by day itinerary for us which was great, but the best part was having the freedom to change things as needed, or make unexpected stops to explore, as the tour unfolded.

I would definitely use this company again if we go back to Thailand.
