Hall of Opium Golden Triangle Park

What :

The Hall of Opium Golden Triangle Park in Chiang Saen, Thailand is a 40 acre museum depicting the history of opium in the Golden Triangle Region, and its effect on the rest of the world.

Created as part of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation’s broader efforts over the last few decades to curb poppy cultivation and opium production in the Northern Thailand Mountains, the museum (also known as "Ho Fin") features interactive displays and exhibits in English detailing the drug's impact on Thailand and the rest of the globe. This very impressive, interactive museum is interesting even for those who usually do not like museums, and can be visited in as little as 45 minutes.

The exhibits feature information on the growth and cultivation of the poppy, opium production, and its refinement into harder drugs like heroin, and the role the poppy’s cultivation in the Golden Triangle Region played in larger geo-political events like the Opium Wars between Britain and China. The Hall of Opium provides great perspective about the history of the Golden Triangle region for travelers on luxury tours of Thailand.

When :

The best weather in Chiang Rai province runs from November through January. The heaviest rain falls during the June to October wet season, and the highest temperatures are from February to May.

Where :

Located in Chiang Saen in Northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province, the Hall of Opium is best reached by private vehicle service from Chiang Rai City, which is about 50 miles away.

Who :

This highly informational museum is something that no one on a tour of Thailand’s Golden Triangle region should miss.

Appropriate Attire :

Western wear is acceptable in the museum.

If you want to get the most out of your trip to Thailand and have a personalized experience that you will enjoy the entire way, book with Easy Tours of Thailand. We had a fantastic time.

The Thai food was amazing and our guide knew the best local and authentic places to dine. The amount of knowledge and insight our guide had about each site, and Thai culture overall, was so helpful. We could have visited these sites on our own, but having our guide along the way really gave us an entirely different perspective and made our experiences seem "full."

Our guides made sure we arrived to popular sites ahead of big tour groups so that we could get the best photo ops (they acted as great amateur photographers too!), and also guided us to amazing 'off the beaten track' areas that I am so glad we didn't miss. We saw everything we wanted to see and more. From the moment we were picked up from our hotel in the morning everything was expertly taken care of the whole way.

We were also provided a private driver and vehicle that was air conditioned (very important!) and safely driven. All things considered, the price of the tour is very reasonable and well worth the money.

I would highly recommend Easy Tours of Thailand to anyone thinking about doing a similar tour.
