Grand Museum

What :

Housed in a palace constructed in the last of 18th century, The National Museum of Thailand is one of the largest repositories of historical artifacts in Asia.

Originally the palace of King Rama I’s viceroy, the building was converted into a museum in 1884 by Rama V.

Home to a vast collection of artifacts and antiques gathered from across Thailand, the museum is split into time periods ranging from prehistoric remains through the current Rattanakosin dynasty’s rule. Travelers on Thailand tours should not miss the chance to step back through the country’s rich history.

When :

Closed Monday and Tuesday, the museum is open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the rest of the week. The busiest times of the year are November and through February so travelers can escape the high summer temperatures and rains in July and August.

Where :

Located in the historic Rattanakosin district of Thailand’s capital Bangkok, The National Museum is near highly popular tourist destinations like The Grand Palace and Wat Pho (home of The Reclining Buddha). This section of the city is easily accessed and navigated using a private car service, or Bangkok’s modern rail infrastructure.

Who :

Thailand’s National Museum is a cultural and historical treat that no first-time visitor to the historic Rattanakosin district in Bangkok should miss while on a luxury tour in Thailand.

Appropriate Attire :

Western wear is acceptable in the museum, but its close proximity to the Grand Palace and numerous Thai temples mean it’s usually one stop on a much larger excursion. If you’re day’s plans will take you into any holy sites or the Grand Palace, dress conservatively by covering your shoulders, arms, midriff, and legs, and be prepared to remove your shoes when entering.

Jason & Cindy Burgess - October 2013

My family and I took a two week long tour of Thailand with Easy Tours of Thailand and the trip truly could not have been any better.

Our guide was very personable, knowledgeable, and her English was excellent. In addition to offering a unique and local perspective throughout the tour, we were completely at ease with her and felt that she truly wanted to make our experience the best it could possibly be.

The private driver and vehicle that was set up for us was also excellent. I knew prior to our trip that it would probably be best to reserve this type of service during our travels, but I had no idea how invaluable this ended up being for us. He maneuvered through crowded streets and unexpected roadblocks with ease, and knew which areas to avoid driving through and efficient alternative routes. To top it off, the vehicle was always very clean, air conditioned, and there were cold drinks waiting for us after visiting a site.

The tour itself was completely tailored to what we wanted to see and what our interests are with assistance from their U.S Sales Office prior to arriving in Bangkok. They provided a day by day itinerary for us which was great, but the best part was having the freedom to change things as needed, or make unexpected stops to explore, as the tour unfolded.

I would definitely use this company again if we go back to Thailand.
